Most people think that the best way to sell BMW is to place an ad in the local newspaper or the Autotrader or even on Gum Tree, it’s quick and simple, right? Wrong, trying to sell your BMW this way could cost you more in time and money, let me explain why.
Firstly you will need to sit down and write your advert, that could take you anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour as you will probably need to do some digging to find all the pertinent information, mileage, previous owners, mot, tax etc etc. You then need to either go online or call the relevant newspaper or publication, read your ad to them as they type it into their computer and then pay them the appropriate fee, probably another 30 minutes of your time will be spent in completing the call.
Okay you’ve spent 1-2 hours placing your BMW for sale advert, now depending on what day the newspaper or publication is published, it could be another 1 week to a few days before your ad is seen.
The next job is to clean your car so that it is presentable, depending on the condition of your BMW this could take a few hours or half a day and could cost at least £100 in valet and cleaning fees. To give you an idea, you will need to clean the dash, vacuum the carpets, you may even need to buy a pair of new matts, buff out any scratches and repair any damaged alloys.
By now you’ve probably spent between £100-200, wasted at least a few days and all before you’ve even taken a single call.
The next bit of joy is waiting for the phone to ring, if you are lucky you will start to receive a few calls a day from people who haven’t read the advert properly and want to know the mileage, the colour, is it petrol or diesel etc etc. In amongst these calls will be canvassers wanting to sell you advertising space, it makes no difference of you state in your advert, “strictly no canvassers, they will call you anyway.”
If you’re lucky enough to get a few buyers around to view the car, you will need to make sure they are insured to test drive the car, most people swear blind that their policy covers them for this but usually they are mistaken or just lying, don’t believe me, check your own policy and see if you are covered to test drive other cars.
Inevitably you will have to be ready to deal with hagglers who want to beat you down on price, not because you haven’t priced your car sensibly but so that they can tell their mates what a great deal their new BMW was.
Are you now starting to get the picture?
